Borb,
internationally I like biotechs. There are some gems for example in Sweden (look at a company called "Pyrosequencing AB" for example). Will break even this year. But biotech right now is under pressure from FDA heavy-handed tactics. The approval process was tightened further. This is not good for investors. I don't know whether the agency's new head appointed by Bush is already confirmed. If there's still an impasse then this is going to drag on. If this continues to be a matter of filibuster inthe Senate then you might have to wait until elections to resolve this..

Summing up: my take on biotechs: InternationalLY YES, US short to midterm "rather not".

I would prefer generics firms like HITK, ALO and some others and branded pharmas with a strong pipeline in addition maybe some niche specialty pharm stocks like DRAX or AMRN...

Actually I like best biotech equipment and medical devices. Firms like NBSC (which I sold almost at $10), Sartorius of Germany, Thermo Electron, VAS, NMTI, MTEC etc..

Borb,
Japan seems to be way stronger technically than the US. When the NAZ tanks, Japan holds ground and when the US market rises the Nikkei shoots up even more..

Today my personal favourite New Japan Radio (NJR) - 6911.J is making new high ground. It broke out ANOTHER TIME and started trading at 860 Yen, gapping up above the old high of 840 Yen from weeks ago on very high volume of 70k on the OPENING ! This is pretty significant. I posted recently that next year's EPS guidance was raised from 25 Yen to 53 Yen and even that appears conservative. What I like more is the Satcom orientation of the company. Surely they also will have products for the booming WLAN segment (25% growth quarter to quarter in the US !) because it appears to be in the same frequency area...

Asahi Kasei (3407.J) and Shimadzu are also inching up. Shimadzu now is forecasting a remarkable turnaround for the current fiscal year and positive EPS of 4 Yen by next March.. Now Shimadzu has huge biotech equipment, avionics & defence and semiconductor equipment exposure. If Shibaura Mechatronics (6590.J) great performance (which I called but couldn't capitalize on - because of limited funds) is any guide then Shimadzu should have positive boost factors in all its operating divisions. The 4 Yen EPS is pretty low IMHO, 10 Yen look possible but that's a premature guesstimate of mine..

I'm looking at more semi related companies to buy. Especially with regard to Power Semis..

Borb & all, - new pick : Nihon Inter Electronics 6974.J - 270Yen

Researched another firm, active in power semis: NIEC (Nihon Inter Electronics) niec.co.jp around 270 Yen, a maker of Rectifiers, Schottky Barrier diodes, Thyristors and hybrid modules. Active in Power conditioning and power management applications.

Firm did extensive restructuring over the past 2 years and quite surprised the investment community by posting a loss including charges of only Y-290mio. instead of a forecast of a loss of 550mio. Aiming for 15% growth in revenues year on year. Should benefit tremendously from booming automotive and consumer electronic vertical markets now and from resurging spending into computer boxes and telecom gear later down the road..

Right now no brokerage is covering this stock - however the stock has risen from 120 Yen to 270 Yen on the encouraging news mentioned above. Valuation is still low - PSR of 0.25 and P/Book of 0.75. That's almost 1/10 of its US counterparts like POWI, SYXI and IRF (which still owns a stake in NIEC which IRF co-founded long ago)
