In this whole Microsoft/DOS story, what has been barely written about is why IBM didn't write their own OS. They certainly had the people to design the hardware and they had more than enough talented people to design operating systems. So, why not hire a few people from the mainframe groups to put together an OS? I've never understood such blind stupidity on the part of IBM. this is a good question, and there is an answer..... the answer is Apple..... IBM didn't know that a desktop PC market existed until apple came along..... and by 1980, they knew that even they would not be able to be involved in this new market if they waited two or four years to put out a product..... (which is their typical time frame to come up with a new product) they knew they had to be in the market in one year.....so they did a crash course.... they did what they call .... an open architecture system... something they never did before.... they threw together pieces of hardware sitting on junk shelves... and spare parts shelves, nothing was done from scratch... they literally threw together a piece of junk.... and they also did something else they don't usually do... they hired out for their software.... why? because these IBM people knew IBM really well, and they knew IBM doesn't make a decision for lunch without 1000 managers getting involved... they knew the only way to get it done in one year was to hire it out...... so they did...... i can come up with quotes to prove any part of this exactly, if you want...... jon.
