UMC sees 12-inch ops reaching monthly breakeven in September or October
-- AFX - Asia, 5/31/2002

e-insite.net

United Microelectronics Corp said it expects its 12-inch
wafer fabrication operations to achieve monthly breakeven in September or October when capacity will be around 6,000-7,000 wafers a month.

Currently, demand for 12-inch wafers exceeds the company's capacity, said Liao Kuan-Yang, director of UMC's Fab 12A plant.

Fab 12A is UMC's only existing 12-inch wafer fabrication plant and produces 3,000 wafers a month. UMC is building two more 12-inch wafer fabrication facilities in Singapore.
