yes, i agree. as the DT CEO said, it was economic suicide. they should give back the spectrum to the govts and just build out EDGE. too bad for QCOM if this highly rational solution comes true.

They wouldnt have enough spectrum to handle any significant amount of data usage. Perhaps they could try rolling out EDGE in the 3G band....but that would also entail building a new network (at least in the big cities). This would probably be cheaper to a certain extent but with the rapid fall of W-CDMA infrastructure prices, I'm not sure how much they would save.

If Europe were to give back the money and decide to ignore mobile data all together, the operators might be better off, but we would now be worried about Nokia, Siemens and Ericsson going out of business. They have spent billions on W-CDMA and need some sort of return on their investment.
