Here are some things need to think about EOTD in the real environment.

For GSM the requirement for the time synchronization is that MS need to maintain a clock that is within 1/2 symbol period of the BS timing, which is 24/13 us, so that means even within this tolerance, your calculated distance can still be off by almost 600 meters.

And we are only talking about the distance to only one BTS with good RF condition.

Throw these possible errors into the measurement of at least 3 BTS and put them into the system of equations we gonna have more errors coming in.

Another thing is that in the real world you don't always see at least 3 BTS with good condition unless you are right in the handover area. So that means in most of the cases, esp when in less BTS density area, you almost surely will see less than 3 or even 2 BTS hot. That means you can not even measure and decode the BCCH from other BTS, so that will render some wild guesses out there.

Besides, BTS are not put out to calculate location but for providing service coverage, so I don't think you can see a whole lot places that are suitable for solving the equations, such as that wonderful graphic provided by the EOTD people.
