If 60 Minutes Wednesday night is to be believed, the increased surveillance powers the FBI has requested amount to surfing the net and attending public meetings looking for suspects and info. The ACLU, of course, opposes this as spying on American citizens. I find it hard to term gathering publicly available info "spying" or to see any real problem with it. These laws were passed in the early 1970's when the FBI did this and also sent undercover agents into private meetings of various groups. (Although you can also argue that if the FBI cannot do that, how can it conduct any undercover work at all?)
