x86-64 is a little different than 3DNOW because it will take 1.5 years rather than 0.5 years before an OS and applications will be ready for it. Every day that goes by increases the chance that Intel will be forced to make their version *compatible* with AMD's, because software support could not possibly be there by time the actual product was ready to ship.

The deadline for getting it into the first 0.09 processor is already past.

IMO, the only reason Intel has not announced their version yet is that Microsoft has refused to say they will support it. An announcement by Intel of new instruction set extensions without a comment by Microsoft would be counterproductive for Intel.

The software developers want to do the least amount of work to support the greatest number of processors. If Intel announces x86+64 plus a few additions to it, and they are already developing for x86-64, they will jump for joy and ignore the additional extensions. If they haven't started any x86-64 bit development yet, they will start immediately and IMO, also ignore the Intel extensions.
