No one's arguing lack of retaliation.

That was inevitable.

After retaliation proves military might, greater security is provided by moral authority, not military.
Without clear moral purpose, attacks will only invite more thousands of suiciders, without limit. There'll be two billion underemployed young men on the planet this decade, perfect demogogue fodder. If suiciding becomes increasingly "vogue", mere military force isn't going to stop it.

Secrecy and stupidity fails to do what clarity of purpose and intelligent disclosure will. If the administration is clear in purpose and not engaged in profiteering, there should be less conflict, not more. Results are what count, and indications of lack of moral clarity won't help get those results.

For example, the white paper announced by Powell was declared to be the damning document, then withheld. Bush family and business partners have conflicts of interest in the oil business, with the Carlyle group, etc etc

In previous wars, our presidents called for sacrifice by the wealthy as well as the non-wealthy. In this case, it begins to much like a no-sacrifice exercise in profiteering, let the public pay, and the insiders profit, etc.

"They may have thought it stupid, but it is not weak."

No, not "it", "he" is stupid, according to international press. And I doubt if you told the truth you personally think Junior has anything to do with this administration other than titular duties and doing what he's told.

"Not weak": it isn't the Bush administration that is strong, it is the American military, economy, and people, in spite of the last two years. The administration is weakening its moral authority with concealment, deception and the strong appearance of conflict of interest in military matters and foreign affairs. That's the only kind of strength that matters for their effectiveness. Without that they may as well all resign.
