Perhaps you're right. But, they must have been connected somewhere. After all, the son went to Harvard, dropped out, then was paid a visit by middle managers from the most staid corporation in America.

Even if you believe that the suits came to Micro-Soft expecting to find an OS to rival CP/M, you have to wonder where they got that idea.

Micro-Soft was not much at all in 1979. Bigger software companies littered the West Coast. Different versions of BASIC were being passed around like frisbees at a hippie picnic. Mrs. Gates must have been concerned. How long had he been out of school by 1980? Perhaps she figured that meeting some real computer execs might inspire him to finish college.
