UN to evacuate staff's families in Pakistan, India

ISLAMABAD -- The United Nations is to evacuate the families of its staff in Pakistan and India due to rising tensions between the South Asian rivals, a diplomatic source said on Saturday.

'A decision has been taken in New York to proceed with the evacuation of the families very quickly,' the source told AFP. 'This decision also applies to staff in India.'

There is no deadline for the move but it will be undertaken 'in the next few days' and several hundred family members will be involved, he said.

The 'method for the departure has yet to be decided,' he said, declining to say whether the evacuation would be carried out by chartered aircraft or on commercial flights.

Last week, Britain said it was pulling more than 150 diplomatic staff and dependents out of Pakistan, shut its visa sections and advised its citizens here to leave following a series of security threats.

The US embassy ordered non-essential staff and families to leave Pakistan shortly after a March 17 grenade attack on a church in the diplomatic enclave of Islamabad which left five dead, including two Americans.
