I believe it.
As long as there's trillions in Washington of the taxpayer's money there will be such disingenuous fights for it.

Either Moore or Vidal made the comment that the reaction of the electorate to not vote is totally rational, because the electorate knows what happens in Washington has little to do with what they want.

The public wants the truth, but the system is structured to, as Cheney says, "varnish" it. There is very high distrust, which the administration chooses to ignore for now, hoping power politics will trump ambivilance. And you notice everything from Homeland Defense on is oriented for the least possible citizent participation, for exactly that reason, to encourage passive citizenry rather than active.

The unvarnished truth about all these issues will eventually emerge. The internet is speeding that process, unlike the current administration's attempt at stalling it. The two trends are in opposition.
I still believe technological populism will win, in spite of even the most fascist wingers.

Meanwhile, how to keep the truth "varnished"?

Economic stress, so everyone is as busy working overtime making ends meet, with less time to read the papers and internet.

Announce enemies and global disasters to frighten the populace into not changing horses midstream.

Meanwhile spend enormous amounts of the public's money on media propaganda.
