When we paid a visit to the beautiful campus of Swarthmore College a few years ago, we were startled to see that entering and exiting the library involved a search of any bag, purse included, that you were carrying. And this is the college's own library, not a public one. The person doing the search was being paid a salary, of course. Think of the hundreds of millions of dollars that are going into the new security arrangements. (Most of it is being pretty much wasted by absurd thorough searches of non-profiled people, of course.)
