Cardiac Science Announces Purchases of Its
Automated External Defibrillators By L.A. County Fire
Department

L.A. County AED Program Largest Among U.S. Fire Departments

IRVINE, Calif., June 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cardiac Science, Inc. (Nasdaq: DFIB -
News) today announced that the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the nation's second
largest fire protection agency and often considered the country's most advanced fire safety
organization in terms of emergency response technology, purchased 40 additional automated
external defibrillators (AEDs) to bring its total deployment of Cardiac Science AEDs to 338.

L.A. County Fire covers a region encompassing 2,278 square miles, 57 cities and 3.5 million
people and responds to more than 234,000 emergency calls annually. The department, which
enjoys a history of leadership in paramedic training and emergency response programs, was
one of the nation's first to embrace AED technology. Los Angeles County Fire began
evaluating the use of AEDs in their operations in the late 1990s and, after a two-year
evaluation of available AED technology, purchased more than 180 Survivalink®-branded
AEDs in 1998. The department continues to use AEDs on all first-response, basic life
support vehicles throughout its territory, including its Lifeguard Division, which covers 76
miles of coastline.
