Re: MSI Clawhammer MB

Nice Link!

You can see on the board where the model in question has 2 DIMM slots instead of three possible on the board, and the frequency is listed at 1.6GHZ (presumeably, Clawhammer, at introduction, will max out at 2GHZ, and be available at several lower speed grades). I notice that it's set up for DDR333 - that may be why they elected to stick with 2 DIMMs, for now.

The board looks ready to go - after right clicking on the image and selecting "zoom in" it's possible to get a fairly good look at the board. No signs of wire repairs or soldered jumpers. There's a standard serial number bar-code label at the top of the board.

It may be that pre-production systems at modest volume (somewhat higher than where Itanic is a year after release?) are being shipped to OEMs, software, and hardware development partners with 1.6GHZ chips.

I remember that the first MSI production boards - the only Athlon boards available at the time of the official Athlon release, had wire jumpers soldered on them, post screening, to correct some layout issue. My recollection is that there was also a capacitor or resistor that was added to the early boards.

The board being shown at computex is clearly more mature then the early Athlon "production" boards.

What if Hammer is being pulled in two months to be available early September instead of Late October?

milo, re: MSI Clawhammer motherboard

It looks like the motherboards will use the 4-pin 12V P4 power connector for additional power supply.
