On the other hand, we weren't allowed to learn her language. I think we all lost out on that deal.

I had that experience as well. At the time I was pleased because it wasn't cool to be ethnic and I wanted to fit in, but I later regretted the missed opportunity of another language. I studied Slovak for a while in my forties, but it's much harder then. Particularly with a language that declines not only nouns and pronouns but adjectives and has as many irregular verbs as French. My grandparents spoke English that was adequate for dealing with a small child, but when they got old and reverted to their first language, I couldn't communicate with them at all. I would have liked to have heard stories that I was too cool to listen to when I was young.

Take all the pains of schools busing, integrated schools, etc...who wants their child
riding a bus for three hours...clear solution is to re-segregate the schools.

The clear solution is to not force integration at least if it means 3 hour bus rides. Not forcing integration is not the same thing as forcing segregation.
