And this is a different board than the earlier link you gave (different name and 3 vs 2 DIMM sockets). I like the inclusion of the IEEE-1394 in the AMD 8111. Has Intel added IEEE-1394 to its chipsets or is it sticking with USB 2.0 despite the widespread use of 1394 in consumer digital video? EDIT: I also like the serial ATA and couldn't find references to 1394 on the i845 and i850 chipsets. -PTGIGABYTE TECHNOLOGY ANNOUNCES GA-K8A SUPPORT FOR UPCOMING AMD OPTERON™ AND EIGHTH-GENERATION AMD ATHLON™ PLATFORMS TAIPEI, TAIWAN—JUNE 03, 2002—GIGABYTE Technology today announced its GA-K8A motherboard supporting the upcoming AMD Opteron™ and eighth-generation AMD Athlon™ processors. GIGABYTE GA-K8A utilizes state-of-the-art 64-bit architecture and HyperTransport technology to provide high bandwidth for exceptional performance and reliability. The GIGABYTE GA-K8A ATX form-factor motherboard employs an AMD-8151™ HyperTransport . AGP3.0 Graphics Tunnel carrying AGP 3.0 compliant 1x to 8x data-transfer mode and HyperTransport interface for superior system performance. The AGP8X interface provides high-bandwidth, high-quality 2D, 3D, and video streams for the AMD Opteron and eighth-generation AMD Athlon platforms. On-board Creative CT5880 allows users to enjoy real-life surround sound from SP/DIF output for enhanced gaming or viewing of DVD movies. The GA-K8A also utilizes 3 DIMM slots for up to 2GB DDR333/266/200, offering a high-volume and upcoming-mainstream DDR memory solution. “GIGABYTE’s experienced R&D team continues to develop products that provide customer increased performance using the latest technologies” said Johnson Lin, the Senior Vice President & General Manager of PCBA Product Business Unit of GIGABYTE Technology. “With support of 64-bit architecture, systems using GIGABYTE and AMD technologies can provide exceptional reliability, scalability and performance for even the most intensive enterprise computing environments.” “Customers using AMD Opteron and eighth-generation AMD Athlon processors and GIGABYTE technologies, benefit from native support for both 32-bit and 64-bit environments. said Richard Heye, vice president platform and infrastructure for AMD. “32-bit application performance can be optimized, while allowing customers to migrate to a 64-bit environment incrementally, as needed.” Applying AMD-8111 south bridge, GA-K8A offers six USB2.0 port, two Serial ATA-133 connectors and IEEE1394 ports to enhance PC connectivity for consumer electronics audio/video (A/V) appliances, storage peripherals, other PCs, and portable devices. In addition to the usual boot devices (floppy, all kinds of IDE drives, network), also supports boot up from USB devices such as CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, ZIP drive. Interrupts can be assigned freely to each PCI device to meet individual needs. Another fantastic convenience are Memory Stick, Secure Digital and Smart Card Reader function support, by optional reader, GA-K8A takes all advantage from their superior reliability, flexibility for future upgrade and data protection capability while processing high speed data transfer. Gigabyte patented EasyTune4 ™, @BIOS™ and DualBIOS™ are available for GA-K8A, make the overclocking and BIOS update in a breeze under Windows mode. EasyTune4™ is a Window-based overclocking utility, allows you simply tweak their system to its maximum performance without change BIOS or hardware setting. The amazing @BIOS™ live update utility allows you to download the BIOS via Internet and update it under Windows mode, without reboots your system. DualBIOS™ technology provides backup BIOS, reducing the chances of BIOS failure due to infection by virus and enabling the desktop PC as stable as server. Q-Flash allow user to flash its BIOS under BIOS setup screen, without any OS or utility. It does not require DOS bootable disk to update the BIOS.
