I'm curious about where you lived in the US, and bet you a pound it wasn't in Seattle! Was it in NY or NJ?

LOL. Manhattan is great. NYC is not so great. Northern Jersey, close to NYC is a lot like NYC. Upper State New York is great. [except for the snow]. Seattle is super; San Francisco is probably my favorite city in the States, but who could complain about San Diego? Boston is a lot of fun, though I think the people are a little 'distant' and untrusting. Directly to your question, born in LA, mostly grew up in Cleveland, and most of my adult life in the burbs and rural areas between Baltimore and D.C. Spent a lot of work hours in Northern VA, D.C. and the Maryland fringes of DC. My favorite States: Maryland, California, Washington, Mass and Maine. My least favorite States: UTAH, Nevada, Iowa, Mississippi, Florida, Texas, Alabama, and Georgia [though Atlanta gets a thumbs up]. No offense intended to those that live in those States, somebody has to like it].

I don't question your report of your experience of people being treated more considerately where you are in England than they were where you lived in the US. I suspect, though, that the particular cities involved had something to do with that.

I'm sure I could find some places in England that I wouldn't care for. London doesn't excite me. Good holiday spot for a couple of weeks, though it'll drain your wallet. I've been lost in London [I usually get lost in most cities I'm not familiar with and always seem to end up in the slums]. I rather be in the slums in London, then in the slums of LA, Baltimore, D.C, Cleveland, or San Francisco....by a long shot. I hear the slums in Birmingham and Liverpool are bad, but I haven't been lost there yet, so I can't compare.
