Net worth. In 1980 Microsoft had about $4 million in sales. Gates owned about half of the company and valuating it at a standard 1x sales gives $2 million net worth.

If you consider that most software companies trade at a multiple closer to 10x than 1x he was already worth $20 million when IBM first approached him.

All of this before mother Mary ever talked to IBM. Face it, the thesis of your book just doesn't hold water.
