"Actually the savings are in the design of an 8-bit bus computer, not on the pins themselves."

The reason an 8-bit bus computer is slightly cheaper is mostly due to there being 8 fewer pins on each package that connects to it. There may have been a savings of a few $1 chips. Of course if IBM was recovering more copper from the etchant due to 8 fewer traces, maybe that savings was worth it?

The savings was peanuts.
