The spitting incidents were minor. Any soldier can take spit, a bit better than enemy fire. That's just an excuse for failure. The war was a failed exercise from the beginning, for no American benefit, only the benefit of those selling arms to both sides. Not a good enough reason to spend American lives and treasure. It only continued by means of the autocratic authority of the Executive Branch, and the growing power of the all-powerful central government that is taking over your life, and the logical extension of which we see today.
