"All the motherboard ever "sees" are the various I/O speeds, which are the same for an 800mhz chip, a 1.6ghz chip, a 2.4ghz chip, etc."

The motherboard also sees ever increasing core current
consumption, 20A, 40A, 60A, etc, which leads to higher ripples
on power planes and general voltage drop along all power
traces, which leads to more crosstalks and lower noise
immunity on some unlucky data pattern, which leads to
perceived "instability" of the platform and frequent BSODs.
