Then again, people with a great deal of comfort and accommodation (ie pleasantville) tend toward frustration or boredom with the status quo. Where as, people who are dealing with adversaries, threats, and survival risks tend toward tighter loyalty among their close associates. I've thought about that and I wonder if it's true about loyalty in general, and not just under real battlefield, mutual-dependence sorts of situations. Though the line you quoted seemed to relate less to loyalty and more to making forward-looking decisions. Still, it's an interesting question. I did read a study years ago that indicated that the lower the level of education the more likely close friendship would be restricted to family members. That seems sort of related to the question.
