(UMC) Under the plan, UMC will port and make available Mips' “Amethyst” line of 64-bit cores for its 130-nm process (0.13-micron) as well as it yet-to-be-announced 90-nm (0.09-micron) technology. UMC is said to be the first company to port the 64-bit chip line to a 90-nm process technology, according to Mips. The Taiwan company will shortly announce its 90-nm foundry process, according to sources. Applications for the recently-introduced 64-bit microprocessor cores from Mips include networking, multimedia, automotive telematics and office automation. "By aligning with Mips Technologies, we can provide 64-bit processor cores that many designers are seeking to integrate into next-generation [system-on-a-chip] designs," said C.T. Lee, vice president of corporate marketing at UMC of Hsinchu, Taiwan. "Designers of sophisticated [system-on-a-chips] who want to significantly reduce time to market will find an ideal solution in industry-standard Mips 64-bit hard cores,” said Kevin Meyer, vice president of marketing at Mips of Mountain View. Seems a bit premature to announce the 0.09 MIPS clone when the 0.13 isn't even available yet. Also, since they are AMD's foundry partner, why don't they just go with the Alchemy 64-bit core?
