Yes, they can, but they may be inappropriately evoked, in the sense that the person is not remiss in failing to conform to the standard, but rather the standard is too cruel. The pain is an evidence of conflict, and ordinarily gives a clue to what is wrong, and demands the improvement of behavior. However, it may also be a comment on one's upbringing or social environment. It is not immediately evident from the pain whether one is laboring under false or exaggerated expectations, or has been at fault......
