I'm convinced that whoever was making decisions would have been moved not to offend Muslims for reasons both of political correctness and political expediency.

There were many things that could have been done that would not have caused reasonable offense. I don't think anybody is suggesting that the FBI should have immediately hauled in every Arab flight student for interrogation. Some discreet and non-invasive investigations, such as checking names and photographs against terrorist databases, backtracking references, etc. could have been a great help in detecting a threat without causing anyone to take offense, or even notice.

I've heard that some denominations have suggested tapping highly populous 3rd world nations for the additional prayer power needed to position the umbrella. The suggestion has been rejected by senior spiritual advisors who cite the established fact that Only American Prayers Count....
