Acer Labs Expects to Meet 2nd-Quarter Sales Target (Update1)
By Iain Pocock

Taipei, June 4 (Bloomberg) -- Acer Laboratories Inc., Taiwan's third-largest computer chipset maker, expects to meet its second-quarter sales target as rising demand for chips that run DVD players counter weak sales of those used in computers.

``We're delivering quite a high volume of DVD chips,'' Acer Labs President Chin Wu said in an interview. ``Chip sales are still rising.''

Acer Labs is benefiting from surging demand for DVD players. The chip designer, which forecast second-quarter sales of NT$1.8 billion ($53 million), reported first-quarter revenue surged more than two-thirds to NT$1.5 billion from a year ago.

Acer Labs is ordering more chips from United Microelectronics Corp., the world's second-largest made-to-order chipmaker. Computer chipsets work with computer processors such as Intel Corp.'s Pentium 4 to control personal-computer functions.

The company, whose biggest shareholder is Acer Inc., expects third-quarter sales will be little changed from the second quarter, Wu said. ``The personal computer sector is still slow,'' he said.

Acer Labs shares were trading as high as NT$74.
