It's also called shooting yourself in the foot, since the main result is that investors lose confidence and don't buy anything. They don't buy the companies with generous stock option plans because they fear future earnings risks. All companies, good and bad suffer, but the ones that suffer the most are those which, because of excess debt obligations, are forced to raise capital just when their stocks are hitting new lows. Fortunately, QUALCOMM doesn't have a debt problem, but the pessimism in the entire tech sector seems to affect all companies, not just the ones in trouble.
