I'm not a Civil War expert, but based on your own comments Lee did not repeat his mistakes at Gettysburg. Here is a bit of West Point data on the Generals.

General Robert E. Lee
The son of a Revolutionary War hero, Robert E. Lee was a model cadet. So much so, in fact, that he was dubbed the "Marble Statue" for his nearly perfect record while at the academy. He was always ranked first or second in his class and never earned a single demerit during his four years at West Point.

Ulysses S. Grant was born in Point Pleasant Ohio, an April 27th, 1822 to a modest middle class family. His father worked as a tanner, thus he developed a proficiency in the handling of equestrians. Which was one of his only mertiable traits dying his appointment to West Point, from which he graduated in 1843 ranking 21st out of 39 graduating students.
