Arrested Development

The day a guy realizes he can surf something happens.
He has grabbed a small corner of his world by the tail.
For many it's a first,
sadly,
for many its the last time too.
Arrested development.

The inability to grow beyond a certain point.
I see it here on Maui every day.
Surfers by the thousands.
Some estimate 85% of our male local population can do it.
Many never stop.
Arrested development.

The family suffers.
The job suffers.
Society suffers as we realize that 85% care more about surf than being a good husband,
or Father,
or Employee
or Citizen,
Arrested Development

As the truth of an 85% wasted life
Spent chasing and slicing a moving wall of water
Dawns on those approaching 50
Something happens.

They dig in,
they rationalize,
they justify
they mobilize and
redouble their failing efforts to succeed
but inside, they hurt.

You see it in the frowning sunburnt faces
You see it in the divorces and shared children
You see it in the side jobs
You see it in the piles of junk around the house
and inside the cars
Arrested development.

Too lazy to change
Suddenly everyone's a tourist,
or a kook,
or a grem
or some other can't-surf mutant life form
Arrested development.

Oh, I could go on and on,
but I gotta run,
There's a gnarly south swell in town...
