You just don't get it...Campaign promises ALWAYS will give way to pragmatism.

There is some communication problem here, and I can't figure out what it is.

Again:

I know that campaign promises are always broken.

This is what Bush has done:

Lied about having made the campaign promise. Out and out made up, after the campaign and election were over, that he said something that he never said. Made up history that never happened to cover up the fact that broke a promise to an electorate that counted it as a very important issue.

Again: It isn't breaking the promise, it's lying about it. You know the classic, it isn't the lie, it's the coverup?

It's a character issue.

He should have said, if he was going to break the promise, "I had to break it because of extraordinary circumstances."

A man of character would have done that.

Instead, he said, repeatedly (though changing the lie from time to time), "I didn't break any promise, because I said during the campaign I'd raid SS if I had to."

No he didn't say it. He made that up for the same reason Clinton said "I didn't have sex with that woman." Because he knew the voters wouldn't like the truth.

Now, for some people a lie about sex is a more important thing than a lie after the fact about what you promised the voters. And after all, he wasn't under oath when he lied about what he'd told the voters. He was just the president.

Do you understand now that it isn't the broken campaign promise about SS I'm raising here as a character issue?
