Give them the freedom to make their own decisions

What a great article! I agree that more people need to be responsible for their choices and their actions, and learn from the natural consequences of those actions.

to face the consequences of their own acts, to see for themselves what their actions do to others and how others respond to them.

Only free people have an incentive to be virtuous. Only people who bear the consequences of their own acts will care about those consequences and try to learn from their mistakes.

IMO this is a lesson that many parents are afraid to teach their children...and the parents tend to constantly "bail out" their children when they are in trouble, instead of letting them learn from their mistakes. (while they're still small mistakes, with small consequences.) Sometimes "tough love" can be a hard concept, but IMO a necessary concept.

Unfortunately some of these children grow up never being held accountable for their actions....and when they do make mistakes, someone else must be to blame for their actions, and the choices they've made.

It's often said that freedom and responsibility are two sides of the same coin – that if you want freedom, you must first accept the responsibility that goes with it.

I agree....and I would love to see less government regulation in every area of our lives.

I'm going to send this article to my sister...since she has a teenager who *needs to be* "set free".

LP...that was an excellent read...

i would like to submit another article i saw posted on another thread...

i'm curious if you see a possible cause and effect depicted in this article of the potential extreme behavior that can evolve when freedom and responsibility are lacking.
