Just went home and boasted how he had "turned over the table on the Americans"

Not surprised he said that because

he feared he was going to be deadmeat, as soon as he got home, had he accepted the offer (he feared assassination). You see, he wants to continue living in palatial comfort and be the cynosure of all eyes. He probably thinks of living on in history, albeit infamously, together with the likes of Osama and his inner circle.

If all the negative things said and written about him are true, Arafat's days are numbered and, with his departure/ouster, peace might be achieved by mid-2003 (my guesstimate).

Problem is that he seems to be still looked upon rather favourably by the E.U. Because it is vital to curry favor with the Arabs for the sake of cheap oil?
