I understand what you are saying about the estate tax. I'd like to add that the starting rate could drop to $1 as long as it exists. I live in a farming area and remember people having to sell half the ground just so the son could continue farming.

It's the same with gun control, why the NRA keeps trying to keep the foot out of the door.

There was a purpose to be served by the estate tax. It was supposed to prevent the perpetuation and continuing buildup of large fortunes across generations which could ultimately result in an oligarchy.

However, so may holes have been drilled in it that it has not worked effectively. If you have the money to hire a battery of lawyers and get trust set up, and particularly if you can buy legislation, you can defeat it.

It can also be argued that the market has done a better job of defeating the perpetuation of large fortunes than the estate tax.
