The percentage would have been higher if the pollers would have just asked if the polled believe in God/Higher Power. Americans increasingly don't participate in organized religion, but still retain a belief in God. I believe I have read percentages in the 80+%, one of the highest or the highest in the West. Too lazy to google it tonight.
