She probably understood that he would make a poor justice, an understanding which is all to obvious now.

From what I read Thomas can only form an opion from written material. He does not follow oral arguments and so waits for a transcript before trying to understand a case. The result is that he cannot use the time to clarify the points that are in dispute. Even then he seems to cut and paste in strange contexts.
