Hi Nadine Carroll; I guess trying to have a substantive discussion on a generalization of Richardson's equations of war to an escalation theory of conflict is impossible with you. Maybe someone else is interested.

Here, let me spell it out for you, and save you the trouble:

THE OFFICIAL ISRAELI SLANT

(1) When Israelis are killed by Palestinians, it is an attack on Israeli citizens by the Palestinians. This is an example showing how the Palestinians want war.

(2) When Palestinians are killed by Israelis, it is because Israel must defend itself against Palestinian attack. This is a sign showing that Israel can defend itself.

(3) Therefore, anytime anyone is killed in the conflict it is because of the incredible immorality of the Palestinians.

P.S. By the way, another important part of the OIS is that the Moslems are unable, because of their religion, to make a lasting peace with Israel. It's written in the Koran. Therefore, there is no reason for Israel to negotiate with terrorists, except for appearances sake.

This approaching the situation from a position of perfected morality whilst painting the other side as being completely evil is a rigidity that will make it very difficult for Israel to be dismantled peacefully in the way that South Africa was. I wonder if this sanctimonious attitude will change over the next decade. My bets are still that it will change when the US cuts off aid around 5~10 years from now. The South Africans were saying exactly the same thing before the US cut off aid to them.

For anyone who is interested in having a neutral discussion on the dynamics of the situation (i.e. without the need to put moral judgements on killing), here's a reference to Richardson's equations, which model an arms race:
