We all are made to think of the muxxle loaders as underpowered, but they often were loaded with 180 gr. ffg. The most "famous" Wincester was 38-40 .38 cal. loaded with 40 gr ffg. There were 45-70's - same as the Springfield trap door - yes, .45 cal 70 gr ffg loading I believe it was a 420 gr. bullet standard loading for the winchester(but would have to look it up).
