JB, re: ...and that April 2002 would have been a great time to buy semi stocks as the industry's recovery becomes increasingly apparent [emphasis added]

Although it was issued on May 6, the actual Merrill text read:

April 2002, we believe, will be a great time to buy semiconductor stocks as the industry’s recovery becomes increasingly apparent. [emphasis added]

ML is trying to cover all the bases before today's mid-quarter update. They lowered their revenue estimate, but reaffirmed their margin guidance. If Intel lowers revenue guidance, then ML can say "See, I told ya so!" If Intel gives a positive outlook, ML can say "See, we told ya margins were going to stay good!" All of us should be use to this by now.
