But the vaccine is made from a different virus - the vaccinia virus which causes cowpox rather than the variola virus which cause smallpox. There's still plenty of vaccinia around- -it is a naturally occurring disease of cows which can also be caught by humans. In humans it is (mostly) mild, but gives immunity to smallpox. That's how Jenner discovered vaccination (and where the name came from).
