In my opinion all the Microsoft operating systems suck, but if I had to I would rate them from least sucky to most sucky as follows: 1. Windows NT 2 and 3. Windows 98, Windows XP 4. Windows 2000 If you have Windows 2000, Windows XP is certainly a step up... Not quite sure if Windows 98 is above or below Windows XP as it has been a while since I've used it.

Both XP and 2000 are modular operating systems. All processes run in either user or kernel mode, both can access NTFS file systems. All processes in kernel mode take priority over user modes, so an ill behaved app is less likely to "lock" the whole machine. I have never experienced crashes to the degree you have described with 2000 pro. XP combines the reliablity of 2000pro with the compatibility of 98se. I just dont like the look and network configuration options of XP. Millenium is garbage. None of them match the reliability of unix. JT
