But... but.... but.... Jenner discovered vaccination in the 18th century. He used dried pus from pustules on cows and rubbed it into cuts on people's skins. If all went well, they ended up immune to smallpox. The virus involved supposedly was the vaccinia virus.

Vaccinia virus is the prototype of the genus Orthopoxvirus. It is a double-stranded DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) virus that has a broad host range under experimental conditions but is rarely isolated from animals outside the laboratory (25,26).
