there is a major difference between investing in equities related to a particular commodity and a business which might be subject to competition, mismanagement, new products, derivatives, etc...and gold has been kicking around a lot longer than internet stocks...since your pres. nixon broke the $ - gold link, it has gone up from $ 35 to about 9 x that... besides, people can cash out some and let profits ride...critics would say that what they kept might be down and the person holding is a fool but it was a house provided position anyway... and you mention 2010...no one knows for sure but fiat money has been turning to dogsh-t in many countries...do you see that trend changing ?
