It's definitely not on my Top Ten or even Top Twenty Five list. SCADS of style, of course, being by David Lynch. (He's the Twin Peaks guy.) Mannered in an interesting way. Which is of course more style. Some wonderful acting. Many memorable scenes, interesting scenes, striking scenes. Very good, menace-evoking, background score, by the same guy who did the music for Twin Peaks. I even thought I was maybe seeing a fine and fascinating film, or what I'd, personally, call a "fine" film, anyway, for the first half or so of the movie, until it kind of self-destructed (imo) and lost its chance. In the end, I think it was as close to a fine piece of art as an essentially trivial exercise can come, I guess. My way of conveying how I reacted to it is that I felt, in the end, that I was seeing a piece of art produced by someone who in his life had seen a million movies and learned from every one; and read six books. If I cared enough, I'd figure out some of the annoying puzzles by watching it again. What's wrong with the movie, to me, is that I am positive that there's not enough there to make investing another 147 minutes in it worth the time. It's a kind of retro fantasy. That essential conceit isn't clear until the end. I guess you could say it had a touch of Memento in the puzzle aspect. In the end, I decided Memento wasn't worth a second watch, either. I liked Blue Velvet (was that it?) more, though it was less ambitious. What Lynch does, he does brilliantly, though. Movies are personal, I know. That's just my reaction.
