Of course, slavery then wasn't a racial thing at all. Greeks would make war on other Greek cities, defeat them, and take the captives slaves. There was no shame in being taken a slave -- it just meant that your city had lost a battle.

Not, mind you, that I would have wanted to be a slave myself. Not pretending it was an bed of roses. But the term is somewhat misleading because we look at slavery through the lens of the American slavery experience, and the slavery in Somalia and elsewhere in Africa even today.
