Re: European and American 3G bodies join forces

This involves both organizations bringing operators and vendors together to put migration strategies from TDMA, GSM, GPRS and EDGE technologies to W-CDMA in place.

Not a bad idea, per se. I mean isn't it about time they had SOME kind of a strategy? Unfortunately, what I think they mean is propaganda; something to counter CDG.

This means the CDMA industry must rely on sources of support other than the 3G Americas organization.

Darn. Now there's a blow.

"The marketplace has chosen GSM and UMTS, and the evolution from GSM technologies covers about 80% of the marketplace,"

As of today, the first half of the statement is false; second half is true. The marketplace is currently IN THE PROCESS of choosing 3g technologies. One easy way to check which technology is being chosen by the market would be to compare subscriber uptake numbers. After all, isn't it the subscribers that are doing the choosing? The carriers build out, then the subscribers pick and choose what they want. Right?

What's been the uptake of GPRS in Euroland?

What's been the uptake of FOMA?

What's been the uptake of 1X?

Just count, then compare. As of today, the market seems to be choosing CDMA 2000. We can check back from time to time to see how the numbers are evolving. Meanwhile....
