Micron Technology Inc. is still interested in buying Hynix Semiconductor Inc. despite previously unsuccessful takeover talks with the troubled South Korean chipmaker, a South Korean official said Thursday.

"I heard that Micron is also sorry about the collapse of a deal with Hynix and that Micron has said that resuming takeover talks is possible if the opportunity comes," said Finance and Economy Minister Jeon Yun-churl in an interview with MBN, a cable channel specializing in business news.

Hynix's board in April turned down the U.S. company's offer to buy its memory chip operations, despite an endorsement of the sale from Hynix's creditors.

The collapse of the deal, which would have created the world's largest memory chip producer, was a setback for the government's efforts to reform the corporate sector in the aftermath of the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis. Much of Hynix's dlrs 6 billion of debt is held by government-controlled banks.

"At the moment, Hynix cannot go on its own and we plan to sell the company in the near future," Jeon said.

Micron was not immediately available for comment.
