TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, the world's largest contract chipmaker, said on Friday May revenues rose 77.8 percent year-on-year to T$15.2 billion (US$446 million).

May sales were also higher than April's T$13.36 billion, a TSMC spokesman said. Dutch company Philips Electronics NV is one of TSMC's largest shareholders.

In the January-May period, TSMC sales were up 12.3 percent year on year to T$64.36 billion.

TSMC's revenues and profits have risen steadily since mid-2001, when it hit bottom in the semiconductor sector's worst-ever downturn and began to recover.

TSMC made the announcement after stock market trading hours. On Friday, TSMC's Taiwan-listed shares fell the daily seven percent limit to end at T$75, while the benchmark TAIEX share index was down 2.83 percent.
