<<Dear Charles: I dont see what the big deal is combining departments. Going to be a big PIA for those doing it and a lot of congresspeople going to lose committees they could chair with less bureacracy but in the long run seems like a good idea to me even without the terror threat just for the sake of efficiency. Now, can these people pull it off. Who knows? I am a little confused why they would throw Customs into it as I view Customs more as a Revenue generator then as a watchdog of some kind. Jdn>>

that big PIA is going to a central data proposition that orcl has been preaching forever. orcl has made 11i to centralize data for business and now the govt. has realized the value of the idea because it has to recognize it as a result of 911.

the horsepower to run these databases is going to come from big reliable and manageable sunw servers and storage systems.

Nobody wants to be insecure, but the balance with individual freedoms is a delicate one. The German Gestapo and the Hoover FBI are examples of what can go wrong. I also haven't heard anybody address the problem of spies and infiltrators -- the more centralized and organized our homeland security efforts are, the more damage such people can do. It's a difficult problem.

That's why I suggested the Devil is in the details.

JMHO.
