It's also, I think, because the Internet can be a powerful tool for overcoming oppression. Look at what Chinese dissidents are managing to do with it.

Information about wrongoing can be published worldwide in a matter of moments. The power of government control of the media, which has been counted on in many countries to continue oppression, is being rapidly eroded.

That makes it scary to government. ALL governments.
