Thank you. Good to talk with someone who has first hand experience.

But most companies are running single processors for the great unwashed, I wonder if that makes a difference?

There is one killer apt: Pro crashes 1/10 as much as 98SE and is a little faster, I have been told.

How many companies are still running win98, how much more reliable is Pro over NT??, if any?

TIA

RE: How does windows professional run on say a 500Mhz pentium II or III?

I've been running W2kPro on a 500MHz PIII for awhile and it runs fine for me. Much more stable than 98 was.
I just took delivery of a Micron 2.2GHz P4 and it came with XP Home. I'll likely change it to W2kPro. The only reason I'm upgrading is that my son's PII had a disk controller failure, so he gets my PIII.

Scott, <What is there in Office 2002 that you really need that can't be had from office 97? Compatibility with gratuitous file format changes inflicted by MS office doesn't count.>

Why not? Some companies (or divisions, if you may) will be using the latest version of MS Office. Either they actually need one of the snazzy new features, or it's about time to upgrade the PCs, and the latest Office came bundled anyway. Then other divisions will find they're using older versions of Office that aren't quite compatible, and they'll want to upgrade. Then their make their customers or partners upgrade in order to stay compatible, and so on, and so forth.
